Our bulletin is aimed at smaller voluntary and community organisations, managers, circuit riders and accidental techies. Here Comes Clay Shirky
Clay Shirky, author of the book on Web 2.0 tools and activity Here Comes Everybody addressed NTEN's annual conference earlier this year.

6 in 10 companies won't take up Windows 7
A US survey has revealed that 6 out of every 10 companies plan to skip Windows 7 in concern over its cost, the time it'll take to deploy, and compatibility with existing software. Many companies have said that they're going to wait for the first service pack before implementing the OS. 39% said that they were concerned about compatibility problems with existing apps, despite the promise of an XP compatibility mode.

Spam increasing
According to Google, overall spam levels in the second quarter of 2009 were 53% higher than during the first quarter, and 6% higher than a year ago. Source: Google Enterprise blog

Nonprofit groups outpace businesses in adopting social-networking tools
A forthcoming study by the University of Massachusetts shows non-profit groups are well ahead of businesses in their use of social-media tools such as Twitter, Facebook and blogs. The study found that 89% of non-profit organisations are using some form of social media.  Source: Philanthropy.com

Social network users reportedly concerned about privacy, but behavior says otherwise
New data from security solutions company Webroot revealed that a majority of users (78%) reported concerns about their social network profiles' privacy, but when asked about specific behaviors it was apparent that "concern" didn't translate into action. Source: ReadWriteWeb

Communitybuilders now open

Communitybuilders aims to deliver empowered, cohesive and active communities by investing in the sustainability of multi-purpose, inclusive community-led organisations. It provides a mix of loans, grants and mentoring support to a range of community-based organisations across England. There are three levels of support from pre-feasibility, feasibility through to capital investment. Organisations who may be eligible are community centres, multi-purpose settlements and social action centres, development trusts, community enterprises, building preservation trusts and community land trusts.

Hardship fundThe Government's Hardship Fund is now open for applications. It offers grants between £50,000 and £250,000 to provide support to third sector organisations in England delivering front line services in health and social care, housing support, education and training, information, advice and guidance.. Working within the Deaf community on arts-based projects

Sola Arts recently completed their 'We Are Superheroes' project with young Deaf people at Broadgreen International School. Producing a digital comic book, they decided to produce a toolkit that would be useful for other organisations working within the Deaf community for the first time on similar arts-based projects. The tool is free to download

Common Craft YouTube technology in plain English
Common Craft have created a number of brief (usually around 3 minutes) low-tech videos to explain how web 2.0 and other new technology can work for you. Topics include blogging, Twitter, RSS, wikis and photo sharing. View their video list.

Following the demise of ukriders.info because of hosting difficulties, a new website for UK Circuit Riders has recently been launched.

Anonymous web data can be personal data
A data protection specialist claims that users can gain control of their browsing history and have it protected by the UK’s Data Protection Act just by contacting companies such as Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft and telling them their identities.
