ict news

Online life
According to a new survey by Nielsen, the average person spent five hours and third-five minutes during December 2009 on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

New software guide
Idealware have recently published their Field Guide to Software for Nonprofits. Written by Laura Quinn, the 84 page book includes an overview of 35 different types of software, helping you to understand what each is, how it fits in with your needs, how much you might expect to pay, and some of the most common vendors in the area.  Available for £12.51 from Lulu.com

Social media benchmarks study published
Research into social media activities by M+R Strategic Services reveals that nonprofit organisations with Facebook pages update them an average of six time each week. However, only 2.5% of "fans" took action and there was significant "churn" of fans joining and leaving. Organisations with Twitter accounts were posting four to five times a day with retweets gaining them additional followers.

TacTech wants your questions
Tactical Technology is putting together a guide on the basics of using digital tools in an activist/advocacy context. They'd like to know what questions you have in your day to day use of computers, the internet and your mobile phone, This won't be a comprehensive manual, rather a practical guide that you can dip into to as you need. The questions should be basic and address challenges you face in using digital tools in your advocacy/activist work.

Computanews 155 out now!
The latest issue of Computanews is available for download as a pdf file. Articles include our look ahead at 2010 (and back at 2000), project management and people, data protection update and book review, NTEN's Managing Technology To Meet Your Mission reviewed, Building Bridges project update and Aspiration's Allen Gunn interviewed about their Answr project.

Social Source Commons

Social Source Commons is a place to share lists of software tools that you already use, gain knowledge and support, and discover new tools. It’s a place to meet people with similar needs and interests and answer the question: what tools do they use?
